TST Defense, as a turnkey contractor, manufactured and installed ballistic protection to the pilot house, the front and sides of the 18” void space directly below the pilot house, CIC, radio room, and the fly bridge including the enclosed “upper” pilot house for twelve 35 meter patrol boats. All ballistic protection material consisted of 100% composites and cross-plied unidirectional polyethylene fibers encapsulated in a thermoplastic resin matrix and covered all vertical surfaces in the spaces specified except those surfaces covered by glass. This material is consolidated in a heated press at extremely high pressure. This processing method provides the mechanical properties necessary to meet the required ballistic certification. Additional protection against exposure to normal maritime chemical environments (petroleum, oils, and lubricants) was provided by a durable poly-urea coating applied to all exposed exterior surfaces of the composite armor. The interior panels have 1/8 inch textured FRP adhered to the visible side to match the interior of the vessel. The completed armor is approximately 1 inch thick and weighs approximately 4.0 pounds per square foot. The armor was custom cut to fit each area specified and held in place with armored material, fastened to the angles, struts or other vertical stiffener of the aluminum structure members.
